It’s somewhat surprising that Netherlands defender Van Dijk had not scored until the win over the Saints. He was able to end his goal drought thanks to the assist from England player Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Netherlands defender scored the fourth and final goal of the game on 52 minutes as Liverpool prepared for the Merseyside Derby clash against Everton

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota set the ball rolling with two goals in the first half. The Reds began the home clash with Southampton where they left off during their last league outing at home to Arsenal. Portugal international Jota scored in the second minute for the first goal before he added a second Liverpool goal on 32 minutes. The third Liverpool goal arrived shortly after the second goal and it was scored by Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara whose shot took a wicked deflection. He was able to make it two goals from two games with his goal against the Saints. Thiago scored his first Liverpool goal against FC Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday.

In summary, the brace from Portugal national team star Jota plus goals from Thiago and Netherlands player Van Dijk took Liverpool into second place with the big win over Southampton and two points clear of holders Manchester City who face West Ham United at home. The defending champions can reclaim second place from the Reds if they beat the Hammers at the Etihad Stadium. In addition, Liverpool are one point off the summit currently held by Chelsea who play hosts to Manchester United in their own league game for this weekend.
